Jamal Rayyan, a prominent presenter of Al Jazeera Arabic and the first face seen on the channel since its inception, has passed away at the age of 73. Rayyan's extensive broadcasting career spanned over five decades, during which he covered significant global and regional events, including the United States' wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, as well as the Arab Spring.
Rayyan joined Al Jazeera on its launch date, November 1, 1996, and presented the channel’s inaugural bulletin. This marked the beginning of the network's growth into a major broadcaster in the Arab world.
Born in Tulkarem, West Bank in 1953, Rayyan began his career at Jordanian Radio and Television in 1974. He later worked with a variety of broadcasters, including Emirati television, South Korean public broadcasting, and BBC Arabic.
