UN chief calls for ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah

The United Nations Secretary‑General António Guterres has called for an immediate ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah, citing significant humanitarian suffering in Lebanon.

According to Guterres, Lebanon has been drawn into a conflict that its population does not support. He emphasized the necessity of a political resolution to restore Lebanon's independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. The conflict has resulted in extensive humanitarian challenges, including a large number of displaced individuals.

The recent hostilities began on Thu, Mar 2, 2026, triggered by an attack on northern Israel by Hezbollah following the killing of Iran’s supreme leader in a joint US-Israeli operation. Israel responded with airstrikes and military advances into southern Lebanon.

The Lebanese health ministry has reported that Israeli military actions have resulted in at least 687 fatalities and 1,774 injuries since the onset of hostilities. The United Nations has indicated that approximately 800,000 people have been displaced within Lebanon due to the ongoing conflict.
