Israel has formally concluded the legal proceedings against five soldiers previously charged with the sexual abuse of a Palestinian detainee at a military detention facility. The incident took place on July 5, 2024, at the Sde Teiman facility. Initial reports indicated the detainee required hospitalization due to severe injuries, including cracked ribs, a punctured lung, and an internal tear, as described in the military’s indictment.

Major-General Yifat Tomer-Yerushalmi, who initially filed the indictment and authorized the release of footage related to the incident, resigned last year. She was subsequently arrested on charges such as fraud and obstruction of justice.

The decision to drop charges has prompted discussions regarding the accountability of the Israeli legal system. According to data from human rights organizations, a substantial percentage of investigations into alleged abuses end without indictment, raising concerns about oversight and accountability.

The United Nations Human Rights Office reported that, among over 1,500 Palestinian fatalities between 2017 and September 2025, only a small number of investigations led to convictions. However, Israeli authorities assert that their actions are in compliance with both Israeli military and international law, and they conduct thorough investigations into alleged abuses.
