The Gaza Mortality Survey (GMS), a comprehensive household study published in The Lancet Global Health, estimates 75,200 violent deaths occurred between October 7, 2023, and January 5, 2025. This figure represents approximately 3.4% of Gaza’s pre-conflict population of 2.2 million, surpassing the 49,090 deaths reported by the MoH for the same period by 34.7%.
As of January 27, 2026, the MoH estimates that at least 71,662 individuals have been killed since the start of the conflict, with 488 deaths occurring post-ceasefire declared on October 10, 2025. An Israeli army official acknowledged approximately 70,000 deaths in Gaza during the conflict.
Despite higher figures, the demographic profile of casualties, including women, children, and the elderly constituting 56.2%, aligns with official Palestinian data.
The GMS involved interviews with 2,000 households, representing 9,729 individuals, to provide empirical data on the death toll. Injuries requiring complex reconstructive surgery have reached 116,020 as of April 30, 2025, with estimates indicating that 29,000 to 46,000 require surgical intervention. The majority result from explosions in urban areas. Gaza’s healthcare infrastructure, with only eight certified reconstructive surgeons pre-conflict, faces a significant backlog that could take a decade to address if capacity is restored.
By May 2025, only 12 of Gaza’s 36 hospitals remained operational, with available hospital beds reduced from over 3,000 to 2,000. Reconstructive surgery capacity is critically low, with severe burns and blast injuries escalating challenges. Research highlights a growing "grey zone" in mortality, where indirect deaths from conditions like sepsis or renal failure blur with direct conflict-related deaths. Forced evacuations and famine have further exacerbated health challenges, underscoring the need for an immediate cessation of hostilities to prevent further deterioration of the healthcare system.
