A bus accident on the BR-153 highway in southeastern Brazil resulted in the deaths of at least six passengers, with an additional 46 individuals being hospitalized. The Sao Paulo state fire department reported the incident occurred early on Monday near the city of Marilia. The current conditions of the injured passengers are not specified.
The Federal Highway Police indicated that the bus was transporting farm workers from Maranhao to Santa Catarina to harvest apples. The vehicle lost control and overturned after the left rear tire burst, causing it to skid off the roadway.
Traffic accidents in Brazil frequently result in fatalities. In early February, a separate incident in Alagoas state led to the deaths of at least 16 people when a bus overturned. Additionally, in October, 17 fatalities occurred in Pernambuco due to a similar loss of control by a bus driver. According to the Brazilian Ministry of Transport, traffic accidents claimed over 10,000 lives in 2024.
