On Wed, Jan 27, 2026, Israel's Supreme Court postponed its decision regarding the independent access of foreign journalists to Gaza. The court has extended the deadline for the government to respond to a petition filed by the Foreign Press Association (FPA) until Tue, Mar 31, 2026.
The FPA has been seeking to end the ban on independent press access to Gaza, which remains in effect unless journalists embed with Israeli forces. This restriction has been in place since the conflict initiated following the events of Sat, Oct 7, 2023. Since the ceasefire in Oct 2025, Israel has continued operations that have resulted in casualties.
Justice Ruth Ronen criticized the government's lack of detailed justification, indicating that citing "security risks" without specifics is insufficient. The FPA's legal team did not have access to the materials presented to the judges.
The FPA, representing 370 journalists from 130 media outlets, expressed disappointment over the postponement and raised concerns about the process being influenced by classified security arguments.
