On Monday, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva engaged in a 50-minute phone call with U.S. President Donald Trump to discuss regional and global issues. The Brazilian government confirmed that Lula has agreed to visit Washington in the near future.

President Lula emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and stability in Venezuela. He criticized the U.S. for the recent abduction of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, describing it as crossing "an unacceptable line." Lula stressed the necessity of focusing on the welfare of the Venezuelan people.

During the call, Lula requested that the "Board of Peace" initiative be limited to issues concerning Gaza and include representation for Palestine. He also advocated for a comprehensive reform of the United Nations, including an expansion of the Security Council's permanent members.

Concerns were raised that the "Board of Peace" could expand its role beyond Gaza, potentially challenging the United Nations' authority. Traditional U.S. allies, such as France and Britain, have expressed reservations about this initiative.

Relations between Washington and Brasilia have improved since Lula's first official meeting with Trump in October. Consequently, the U.S. administration has exempted key Brazilian exports from previously imposed tariffs and lifted sanctions on a prominent Brazilian judge.

Lula's visit to Washington is anticipated to occur following his scheduled trips to India and South Korea in February, with a specific date to be determined soon. Recently, Lula has also communicated with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
