Ceasefire Agreement Extension in Syria

The Syrian Ministry of Defence has announced the extension of a ceasefire agreement between Syria’s military and Kurdish-led forces for 15 days. This extension, effective from 11pm local time (20:00 GMT) on Saturday, supports a United States operation aimed at transferring ISIL (ISIS) detainees from facilities previously managed by the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

The SDF confirmed the extension of the ceasefire, emphasizing that the agreement aids in de-escalation, the protection of civilians, and the establishment of conditions necessary for stability.

Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa had signed an agreement with the SDF in March of the previous year to integrate the group into state institutions. However, implementation challenges led to disagreements, resulting in recent clashes across various regions. Earlier this week, the Syrian government announced a four-day truce to pause hostilities, during which government forces made significant territorial gains previously held by the SDF.

As a result of the ceasefire, Syrian forces advanced towards key areas, bringing vital oil fields, hydroelectric dams, and facilities holding ISIL fighters under government control, including the al-Aqtan prison in Raqqa province.

The United States has been urging both the Syrian government and the SDF to maintain the ceasefire. On Wednesday, the US announced the commencement of transferring ISIL-linked detainees from Syria to Iraqi-controlled facilities, with up to 7,000 individuals potentially being relocated. The US military is coordinating with regional partners, including the Iraqi government, to ensure the ongoing defeat of ISIS, as emphasized by US Admiral Brad Cooper.
