Israel has extended its prohibition on Al Jazeera Media Network's operations for an additional 90 days. The directive, signed by Israeli Communications Minister Shlomo Karahi and announced on Sun, also restricts broadcasting companies from delivering services to the network within the country.
In May 2024, during Israel's military actions in Gaza, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's cabinet voted to cease Al Jazeera's operations in Israel. This followed the Israeli parliament's enactment of legislation permitting the temporary shutdown of foreign broadcasters deemed a "threat to national security."
Subsequently, in September of the same year, Israeli forces entered Al Jazeera's offices in Ramallah, located in the occupied West Bank, seizing equipment and documents and closing the network's office.
Israel has extended its prohibition on Al Jazeera Media Network's operations for an additional 90 days.
In December last year, the Israeli parliament approved an extension of the 2024 law, referred to as the “Al Jazeera law,” for an additional two years.
According to Walif al-Omari, Al Jazeera Arabic’s bureau chief for Jerusalem and Ramallah, the recent decision by Israel was made nine days after the Ministry of Communications reported that Israeli security and military services continue to perceive the network's broadcasts as detrimental to Israel's security.
