Syrian Army Advances in Strategic Regions
The Syrian army is advancing towards Raqqa, previously a stronghold of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), after successfully capturing the strategic city of Tabqa and its military airport on the Euphrates River. This development follows the capture of the Euphrates Dam, also known as the Tabqa Dam, after intense combat with SDF forces. Government forces are currently consolidating their position in Raqqa governorate, under SDF control since 2015.
On Sun, Jan 18, 2026, the Syrian army took control of Tabqa, approximately 40km west of Raqqa, including the Euphrates Dam and the Freedom Dam. Additionally, government-allied groups have reportedly taken control of the Asayish headquarters in Markada and several significant oil and gas fields in the northeast, including Jafra and Conoco in Deir Az Zor province.
The Syrian Petroleum Company has indicated that the Rasafa and Sufyan oilfields in Raqqa might soon resume production. Meanwhile, the SDF has been accused by Syrian state media of deploying drones in areas east of Deir Az Zor.
Raqqa, an Arab-majority governorate, possesses some of Syria's largest oil and gas fields. The recent military advances have sparked celebrations among Arab civilians in areas seized by the Syrian army, highlighting the social and demographic tensions within the region.

The Kurdish administration has acknowledged this decree as a positive initial step but advocates for comprehensive constitutional reforms to ensure lasting protection of rights.
