The Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, has announced that Nickolay Mladenov, a former United Nations Middle East envoy, will lead a proposed United States-led "Board of Peace" in Gaza. The announcement followed Netanyahu's meeting with Mladenov in Jerusalem on Thursday.
The proposed board is a significant component of the United States' plan to address the conflict in Gaza. Under this plan, the Board of Peace would oversee the establishment of a new technocratic Palestinian government, the disarmament of Hamas, the deployment of an international security force, the repositioning of Israeli troops, and the reconstruction of Gaza.
The plan has resulted in a temporary ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, although hostilities have persisted. Since the truce commenced on October 11, 2025, reports from the Gaza Health Ministry indicate that Israeli attacks have resulted in the deaths of at least 425 Palestinians.
The Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, has announced that Nickolay Mladenov, a former United Nations Middle East envoy, will lead a proposed United States-led "Board of Peace" in Gaza.
In a statement, Netanyahu's office confirmed Mladenov's future role as Director General of the "Peace Council" in Gaza. Israel's President, Isaac Herzog, also met with Mladenov but did not provide further details.
The board's membership is expected to include countries such as the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Egypt, and Turkiye. Mladenov, who has previously served as Bulgaria's defense and foreign minister and as the UN envoy to Iraq, held the position of UN Middle East peace envoy from 2015 to 2020.
During his tenure as Middle East envoy, Mladenov maintained productive relations with Israel and worked to mitigate tensions between Israel and Hamas.
