Controversial Definitions and Free Speech
A significant order, now rescinded, adopted the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of anti-Semitism, which has been criticized for potentially censoring speech critical of Israel. This definition includes 11 examples, six of which pertain to Israel, such as "claiming that the existence of a State of Israel is a racist endeavor" and "applying double standards" to Israel.
Critics argue that these measures aimed to criminalize dissent and limit free speech. Various advocacy groups, including the Palestine Youth Movement and the Council on American Islamic Relations, have expressed support for Mamdani's revocations, emphasizing the importance of protecting free speech and rights to criticize government policies.
