The Israeli government has approved the formalization of 19 settlement outposts as independent settlements in the occupied West Bank. This marks the third wave of such formalizations this year, aligning with the government's priority of settlement expansion and annexation.
Settlement Outposts and Government Policy
Settlement outposts, considered illegal under international law, are established by settlers without prior government authorization. Despite this, they receive protection and services from the Israeli army. Formalization allows these outposts access to government funding, infrastructure, and opportunities for expansion.
Many newly formalized outposts are located in the northeastern West Bank, an area with historically low settlement activity. This includes two outposts evacuated in 2005.
The formalization of these outposts supports settlers in expanding their presence on Palestinian land. B’Tselem, an Israeli human rights organization, reports that settler attacks have displaced 44 communities in the West Bank over the past two years, with incidents including arson, vandalism, and physical assaults.

This has led to significant economic and social challenges, as evidenced by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development's report, which highlights a regression in Palestinian economic development.
