Humanitarian Situation in Gaza Amid Winter Storm

Severe weather conditions have impacted the Gaza Strip, exacerbating the humanitarian situation due to ongoing restrictions on essential supplies. An eight-month-old infant, Rahaf Abu Jazar, succumbed to the cold after her family's tent in Khan Younis was inundated by floodwaters from heavy rainfall. This event highlights the urgent need for increased aid and shelter for displaced families.

Gaza's civil defense agency has been overwhelmed, receiving over 2,500 calls in a 24-hour period. The storm has led to the collapse of three buildings in Gaza City. Despite the need, the flow of tents and winter supplies has been restricted at the border, compounding the challenges faced by the local population.

The Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) reports that only 15,600 tents have entered Gaza since an October ceasefire, assisting approximately 88,000 Palestinians. However, the need remains significant, with 1.29 million people requiring shelter. Israeli rights group B'Tselem indicates over 6,500 trucks loaded with essential supplies, including tents and warm clothing, are awaiting entry into Gaza.

Jonathan Crickx, UNICEF Palestine's Chief of Communication, has raised concerns about the potential for waterborne diseases due to poor hygiene conditions exacerbated by the storm. The lack of adequate shelter and warm clothing further increases the risk of hypothermia, especially among children.

UN spokesperson Farhan Haq emphasized the critical need to deliver warm clothing, tents, and shelters to prevent further fatalities. The UN's humanitarian office has responded to over 160 flooding alerts as Storm Byron continues to impact the region.
