Living Conditions in Gaza Displacement Camps

In Deir el-Balah, Gaza, families are facing significant challenges due to inadequate living conditions in displacement camps. Arafat al-Ghandour and his family reside in a tent of approximately eight square meters, accommodating 15 people. The space is shared with extended family members, including elderly parents and children.

Weather conditions exacerbate their situation, with persistent rain causing further discomfort and damage to their already worn shelter. The family struggles with basic needs, lacking sufficient clothing and blankets to protect against the elements.

Families, such as Arafat's, have been displaced for over a year and a half, with no means to rebuild their homes or relocate. The lack of privacy and inadequate shelter has left them feeling demoralized and without dignity. The cost of acquiring a quality tent, estimated between 1,800 and 2,500 shekels ($550 to $775), is beyond their financial capability.

Additionally, the presence of sewage due to inadequate sanitation facilities poses health risks. The inability to access basic necessities such as food, clean water, and proper shelter remains a critical issue.

Displaced families are calling for immediate assistance, including the provision of tents and other essential resources. The financial burden of purchasing tents and materials like tarpaulins, which cost between 250 and 400 shekels ($75 to $125), highlights the urgent need for support.

These families continue to wait for promised interventions, such as housing units, which have not materialized. The situation remains dire, with the onset of more severe weather conditions expected to worsen their plight.
