Syria's Political Transition: One Year Anniversary

Syria marked the first anniversary of the removal of former ruler Bashar al-Assad with nationwide celebrations. Fireworks and flags were prominent as citizens commemorated the end of the 53-year al-Assad dynasty, following an 11-day offensive by opposition forces.

President Ahmed al-Sharaa, who led the opposition forces, performed a dawn prayer at the Umayyad Mosque in Damascus. In his speech, he emphasized the commitment to rebuilding Syria, stating, "We will face all challenges and rebuild a strong Syria."

Over the past year, the new government has taken significant steps to improve living conditions. A presidential decree in June increased civil servants' minimum salaries. Additionally, repair work on the power grid has enabled cities like Aleppo, Homs, and Damascus to receive uninterrupted electricity on a trial basis.

Several prisons, including Sednaya and Mezzeh, have been permanently closed. Despite these developments, significant challenges remain, including high living costs and limited job opportunities.

International Support and Economic Focus

The United Nations has reiterated its commitment to supporting Syria's political transition. UN Chief Antonio Guterres stated, "We stand united to build a foundation of peace and prosperity."

Heiko Wimmen of the International Crisis Group highlighted the importance of focusing on economic recovery after the lifting of international sanctions. He stressed the need for political inclusivity to ensure all citizens have a voice in Syria's future.

Over 782,000 Syrians have returned to the country, according to the International Organization for Migration. However, the need for more economic opportunities remains crucial for long-term resettlement.
