German Chancellor Friedrich Merz arrived in Israel for his first official visit since taking office in May. The visit aims to reaffirm the diplomatic ties between Germany and Israel amid ongoing tensions in the region.

Upon arrival at Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion airport, Merz was greeted by Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar. The German Chancellor also held discussions with Israeli President Isaac Herzog in Jerusalem.

Earlier, Merz met with Jordan's King Abdullah II, primarily discussing the situation in Gaza. Both leaders emphasized the need for increased humanitarian aid and reiterated their commitment to a two-state solution.

Merz has consistently criticized Israel’s military actions in Gaza, which have resulted in significant casualties. In August, Germany restricted military exports to Israel for use in Gaza, though these restrictions were lifted following a ceasefire agreement in October.

Despite the ceasefire, incidents of violence continue, and humanitarian aid into Gaza remains insufficient, according to United Nations reports.

Germany continues its military cooperation with Israel, recently implementing the first phase of the Israeli-made Arrow missile defense system. The agreement is valued at $4.5 billion, marking a significant milestone in bilateral defense relations.

During his visit, Merz plans to visit the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial and meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. However, there are no current plans to invite Netanyahu to Berlin, due to his ongoing legal challenges.

Merz's visit underscores Germany's commitment to diplomatic engagement and the pursuit of peace in the region. The Chancellor continues to advocate for reforms within the Palestinian Authority to foster a constructive role in post-conflict governance.
