Aid trucks roll into Gaza after dispute over hostage bodies

Aid trucks commenced entry into Gaza on Wednesday, as Israel proceeded towards reopening the Rafah crossing following discussions regarding the return of the bodies of deceased hostages. Israel previously indicated it would maintain the crossing closure and limit aid, attributing delays to Hamas.

The militant group returned additional bodies overnight, alleviating tensions on a fragile ceasefire that has ceased two years of conflict and resulted in the release of all living hostages.

Israeli authorities have stated that preparations are in progress to reopen Rafah to civilians and facilitate the passage of 600 aid trucks. The Palestinian Authority has also expressed readiness to assume control of the Gaza side of the crossing.

Rafah serves as a crucial conduit for Palestinians, facilitating essential aid and medical evacuations. An existing agreement with the EU Border Assistance Mission continues to support the management of the crossing.
