A ceasefire commenced in Gaza at noon local time on Fri, marking the first cessation of hostilities since March. This development is part of a U.S.-drafted plan aimed at ending the two-year conflict. Following the ceasefire, there was a significant movement of displaced Palestinians returning to northern areas as Israeli forces initiated a partial withdrawal.
The Israeli cabinet approved the ceasefire on Thursday night, activating the initial phase of the U.S. plan. The Israeli military has confirmed troop withdrawal to a predetermined redeployment line, including areas such as eastern Khan Younis.
An official statement indicated that Israel will initially maintain control over 53% of the territory. This decision enabled thousands of Palestinians to begin their return journey to Gaza City, with reports of large crowds moving northward along the coastal road.
The First Phase: Hostages for Prisoners
The initial 72-hour period is pivotal. Under the agreement, Hamas is expected to release the 20 remaining Israeli hostages. In exchange, Israel will release 250 Palestinians serving long-term sentences and 1,700 others detained in Gaza during the conflict.
