On Mon, Oct 2, 2025, an attack occurred at the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue in Manchester, resulting in the deaths of two individuals. The attacker, identified as Jihad al-Shamie, a 35-year-old British citizen of Syrian descent, declared allegiance to ISIS during the incident.

According to UK counterterrorism police, al-Shamie contacted emergency services during the attack to pledge loyalty to ISIS. He used a vehicle to strike pedestrians and attacked individuals with a knife at the synagogue, coinciding with Yom Kippur.

Armed officers neutralized al-Shamie at the scene. Although he appeared to be wearing an explosive belt, the device was determined to be non-viable. During the incident, an officer inadvertently shot one of the victims, Adrian Daulby, as worshippers attempted to secure the synagogue. Another victim, Melvin Cravitz, also lost his life, and three individuals sustained serious injuries.

Authorities are investigating the motivations and circumstances surrounding the attack. Al-Shamie had a criminal record and was on bail for an alleged crime at the time of the incident, but had not been previously flagged by counterterrorism agencies or the Prevent program.

Six individuals in the Greater Manchester area have been arrested on suspicion of terrorism-related activities in connection to the attack. A court granted police additional time to detain four of the suspects, while two were released. The identities and connections of those arrested have not been disclosed.

In a separate legal matter, a trial commenced for two men accused of planning an ISIS-inspired attack on the Jewish community in Greater Manchester. Authorities confirmed no connection between this trial and the recent attack at the synagogue.
