Paramount, a prominent media conglomerate based in the United States, has finalized the acquisition of the commentary website Free Press. As part of this acquisition, Bari Weiss, the founder of Free Press, will assume the role of editor-in-chief at CBS News.

David Ellison, CEO of Paramount, has recognized Weiss for her "entrepreneurial drive and editorial vision." Ellison emphasized that this decision aligns with Paramount's broader strategy to modernize content and enhance its engagement with global audiences.

The acquisition follows the recent merger between Skydance Media and Paramount, completed in August. In seeking regulatory approval for this merger, Skydance committed to increasing "viewpoint diversity" at CBS, as indicated by Federal Communications Commission Chairman Brendan Carr.

Before this approval, Paramount agreed to a $16 million settlement for a defamation lawsuit filed by Donald Trump regarding a segment on CBS News's 60 Minutes program.

Bari Weiss founded The Free Press in 2022 after her departure from The New York Times. Her work has often focused on critical analysis of diversity, equity, and inclusion programs, as well as skepticism regarding vaccines.

Weiss's approach has garnered support from notable figures such as venture capitalists Marc Andreessen and David Sacks, former Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz, and hedge fund manager Paul Marshall.

Despite the support, The Free Press has faced criticism for its coverage, particularly regarding articles on Israel's policies in Gaza. A recent article titled "The Gaza Famine Myth" questioned reported famine conditions, despite findings from the United Nations and medical organizations.
