The Najaf Criminal Court has sentenced an Iraqi individual to life imprisonment for involvement in human trafficking to Russia, where recruits participated in the conflict against Ukraine. This verdict was issued under a 2012 law that prohibits recruiting or transporting individuals for exploitation.

The identity of the individual is reportedly Risan Falah Kamel, as disclosed by anonymous Iraqi judicial and security officials. Further names and the official indictment text have not been made public.

In September, the Iraqi Parliament’s Foreign Relations Committee acknowledged the involvement of Iraqi nationals with the Russian military. The committee intends to investigate this further and take measures to halt the phenomenon.

Reports have suggested that several thousand Iraqi nationals might be participating in the conflict on behalf of Russia, motivated by financial incentives or the opportunity to use Russia as a passage to European countries.

North Korea has reportedly contributed military personnel and ammunition to support Russian efforts during the conflict, particularly in the Kursk region, as per American and South Korean sources.

Discussions between Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Beijing have emphasized the strengthening military cooperation between their nations since the strategic partnership agreement in June 2024. Kim expressed a commitment to support Russia further if necessary.

Additionally, instances of foreign nationals participating in the conflict include the capture of a British national fighting for Ukraine and reports of Chinese nationals fighting for Russia. Despite economic support to Russia, China maintains a stance of neutrality and emphasizes diplomatic resolution.
