The Najaf Criminal Court has sentenced an Iraqi individual to life imprisonment for engaging in human trafficking activities related to the conflict in Ukraine. The court disclosed that the convicted individual, along with other associates, organized groups to participate in foreign conflicts for monetary compensation. This judgment was based on a 2012 statute criminalizing the recruitment or transportation of individuals for exploitation.
According to anonymous sources from the judicial and security sectors, the individual was identified as Risan Falah Kamel. As of now, no additional individuals have been named, and the official indictment document has not been made public.
The ongoing conflict, now in its fourth year, has seen the involvement of numerous foreign fighters on both the Russian and Ukrainian sides. In September, the Iraqi Parliament’s Foreign Relations Committee acknowledged the participation of Iraqi nationals supporting the Russian military efforts. The committee indicated plans to further investigate this matter to prevent its continuation.
