Turkey Restricts Access To Popular Online Platforms, Here’s Why

Access to various online services has been restricted across Turkey. NetBlocks, an internet monitoring organization, reported disruptions affecting platforms including X, YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, WhatsApp, Telegram, and Signal.

The restrictions were implemented during protests and rallies organized by the opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP). This followed a court ruling that replaced CHP’s leadership with trustees, prompting calls for public demonstrations. The Freedom of Expression Association in Turkey confirmed the disruptions, although the Access Providers Union has not issued a statement on the matter.

Historically, Turkish authorities have restricted digital platforms during periods of political unrest. The current measures reflect a recurring pattern of control over social media during large gatherings or public unrest.

The internet restrictions aligned with a decision by Istanbul authorities to ban protests for four days across six districts starting on Thu, Sep 7, 2023. NetBlocks reported a significant drop in access to social and messaging platforms shortly after this announcement, linking it to calls for CHP rallies in Istanbul.

The Turkish parliament passed a law in October 2022 granting authorities the power to restrict the bandwidth of online services. This "disinformation law" provides a legal framework to limit access during politically sensitive times.

There is currently no timeline for the restoration of normal internet access. NetBlocks confirmed that the restrictions remain in effect, with Istanbul experiencing the most significant impact. The lack of an official explanation has led to dissatisfaction among rights groups and users.

In response, many individuals in Turkey have turned to virtual private networks (VPNs) to bypass restrictions. VPNs allow users to route their internet traffic through servers outside the country, thus maintaining access to restricted platforms. However, VPNs may result in slower speeds and can be blocked by authorities.
